A four day / three night exploring NW Oklahoma

Paid for by a Dept. of Defense Grant

During the 2011-2012 school year, all 5th graders from Lawton Public Schools had the opportunity to attend a 24 hour science camp located at Camp LuJo from noon Friday to noon on Saturday. From those camps a camper was selected as a best camper. Best campers were selected by showing kindness to other campers, politeness, overall good attitude, and willingness to learn. Of the 11 LPS camps, twenty-one students were selected as Best Campers and were notified at the beginning of May. Of those, 16 showed up to parent's night meeting and briefing. Two others dropped out due to personal reasons leaving 14 to continue.

These 14 had to attend two sessions of classes (10 hours of classwork), one which was inside a classroom, and the other a practical experience in the Wichita Mountains.

We left on Monday, June 4, 2012 and returned Thursday, June 8th. The fourteen students attending were Ashley, B.J., Bailey, Davion, Frankie, Hanniel, Kayla, Kevin, Kolin, Krystyn, Kylee, Omar, Stephanie, and Tiana. The staff were Mr. D (Duane Del Vecchio)- Director, Quincey Mays, Cody DeVilbiss, Sandra Blood, Ravynn Blood, Bailey Blood, and Jesse Blood.

Students experienced a cave tour, reptile identification, sleeping in a cave, wild caving, swimming, seeing the transit of Venus across the sun, constellation study, bat emergence, and nature studies all of which can be observed though a pictorial diary shown below.
