Mon & Tues - Aug. 12 - 13

Bob picked me up at 0500 (that's 5 AM <grin>) and we started the soon to be epic quest! We discovered 5 Earthcaches, 1 Myster, 14 traditionals (mostly new counties), 8 Virtuals, and 3 Whereigo's over the next two days. We left Texas, entered New Mexico and stopped right at the border of NM & AR. The next day back up and driving though AZ and into NV. Here are some hightlights:

Our first stop (other than county caches) was an Earthcache called the Blue Hole. Strange to see this thing in the middle of a desert Bob said he wouldn't be caught dead taking a picture here so I had to get one then! <grin>

We had to compare elevations between the two bodies of water... so we chose the blue hole's neighbor pond. Can you see what makes this virtual unique? Our lady of the tree virtual

I have to stand in front of the Contintenal Divide sign or I could give away some answers for the Earthcache. This was once tourist country... now it's pretty dried up. This trip would be about Mesa's and Butte's for all of the Earthcaches that asked about them!

The next morning we headed off into Arizona and first stop was the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert After that we headed to Winslow AZ to get a virtual from the band EAGLES. They really cater to the area with bronze statues of the band, a girl in a pickup, and other stuff from the song

Even the stores are trying to lure you in We were there at 8 a.m. and they already had a guy playin in the parking lot! The Last great Railroad Motel is an old but still very fancy motel (and still in business).

To get the virtual we needed a picture on the back porch On the road and I finally talked Bob into going to see the Barringer Crater - one of the biggest in the world The virtual just needs you to take a picture in front... the earthcache you have to pay admission to get to the crater.

One thing you can't see is there is a little building in the middle down there with a wood cutout of a lifesized astronaut... only with the telescopes can you see it. A movie panorama

I had to get a picture of me near the apollo capsule Astronauts trained in the crater simulating the moon and other harsh conditions A nearby traditional cache (we got it for the county) but still is holding the theme of the area.

The electrical grid here is outlandish! Very cool!! You can drive across it, park either side, spend the day... however, it was 113 and we didn't want to die of heat exahustion!

The vitrual "A Virtual Reward for a Dam Cool Dog" ... very good story about a dog that hung out while the building of the dam was going on. It ends sadly and to get the virtual you have to get info at his gravesite (right below here) and take a picture
