Saturday - March 15, 2014 - The Day We Finally Got Back to Carlsbad!

Participants: Dale Amlee, Steve Beleu, Duane Del Vecchio, Carol & Dale Town, & Jon & Kelly Woltz
Trip Report by: Duane

With Cave Resources playing Merry-Go-Round with staff (and not able to keep one there for an extended period of time), we haven't been able to get a trip back down to Carlsbad Caverns for our annual (or not so annual) cave restoration trip.

The following is a visual trip report - the trip report submitted to Carlsbad Caverns Cave Resource office will also be included with this report.

Awaiting us at the CRF Hut 6 at Carlsbad Caverns.... our ID Badges and paperwork... ... and oh yeah... our tools for the cave! <grin> A welcome sign from Shawn Thomas - used to cave with us and now is in the office of Cave Resources.

Shawn - our hero! He actually contacted us that grottos could work there again!! So the crew came in to get their badges - Kelly here doing the paperwork... Carol, Dale T, and Jon

Steve. Jon, and Dale A. With the paperwork done we headed down to Lower Cave Whew... kinda forgot how those ladders worked... nothing like a good sweat in the morning!

Made even more fun carring down buckets, bottles, etc.... First stop... National Geographic Pit... to check on our catch net built on June 2007. We weren't sure what was still there after almost 7 years! But the net was working pretty good!

We repaired one pipe and a few holes in the mesh from large rocks falling though... Same picture as before but with no flash... what we see with our eyes.... We were able to move the sections around to make needed repairs.

We basically "Stitched" the plastic netting with Zip Ties... A lot like doing stitches to hold a hole closed in y our jeans... One person on one side would push it through and the other would then loop it back though another hole.

Then you snip off the ends and whaala! Finished! Dale T cleaned the pit out of any extra stuff down in it and Dale A and Jon did the stitching... Some places one could do it by himself...

Others... it was too high to mess with.. that's where Duane on top came in... he moved the sections so they could be worked on down in the pit. Dale T meanwhile found a stash of coins that we must have missed last trip... After the coin find, Dale T reglues a pipe together... it seems we never glued it in the first place as it had no purple primer stains.

We had four total holes in the netting... two of 3 in x 3 in and 2 smaller than that. Same picture as before but no flash... See... Duane is actually there but never in the pictures! (cause I'm taking the pictures!)

While we were working on the net, we had others from our group come and take a look at what we were doing... Steve observing Kelly came and looked in on us too.. they were doing some trail cleaning. We autographed the pipe when we built it...

Good thing because we couldn't believe it was 7 years ago!!! The other net we built... not hurt at all! A few from the Lower Cave entrance to this area...
