Mt. Rushmore/The Needles/Devil's Tower

On Fall Break (+ 5 days) of 2012, I went with my Uncle Bob to do some bucket list items... Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, Devil's Tower, and Yellowtone... here is some pictures telling the story...

On Day 3 we finally got to Mt. Rushmore... My Uncle Bob On the road you can start seeing it...

It was nothing like I thought it would be like... it was much more majestic... the Park Service really made this place nice!!! The head guy in charge of building Mt. Rushmore.

Before getting to the grand terrace you go by the corridor of states. Well... finally see it in person! The visitor center has lots of films to view about the making of the mountain etc... worth watching...

There is a path down to where the drillers, sculpters, etc... stayed while working...but it was closed in the off season. One of the air compressors used to chip the rock from the mountain... But there is a 1/2 mile path/trail that winds around to the base of the mountain....

and it takes you right to the bottom of the rock chips... This close you can see the drilling marks... Each one of the faces close up...George

Proof... I didn't rip off all of these pictures! <grin> After leaving the park towards the Needles, we came on a side road that gave us this view... All by himself!

Then we headed toward the area nearby called the Needles If you have a big RV... you AREN'T going to make it on this very winding and clostrophobic road!! :) The Needles are upthrusts of rock almost at a straight 90 degree angle...

instead of the normal slant you see usually. Bob feeding some chickmunks... You can tell they are quite used to humans....

Whereas the road was very skinny (one lane sometimes between rocks)... it was a very cool road with scenery everywhere!!
