Day 4 - State Park Day - Longhorn Caverns & Inks Lake

12/28/25 - State Parks Day - So got up early and left Houston to beat traffic (even though it was Sunday). TOOK AN HOUR and 20 MINUTES just to get out of Houston! Geezz... and drove north of Austin to go to Longhorn Caverns State Park and then after that Inks Lake State Park (about 5 miles from the caverns).

So Show Cave #2 on the trip! Was here 10 years ago but came in again on this trip.

This cave is different than the other caves in this area. Water moved a lot though this space. Formations like this are rare in the caverns and are not active - dried up. But the water created great rooms and passages...

No pretty formations but lots of room. In fact, there used to be concerts and dancing in these rooms. It was also a Civil Defence Location for nuclear attack in the 60's. (which wouldn't have worked as the cave breathes hard - meaning air flow is high from the outside). Years and years of water shaping.

Some neat ceilings due to the standing water during the thousands of years of being in the cave.

After leaving the cave, I went to explore Inks Lake State Park. Neat mini cabins I wouldn't mind staying in and a great general store for campers along with kyack rentals.
