Well I finally got to work with the Hackberry Flat staff in SW Oklahoma on Monarch Butterfly season. As part of the migration back to Mexico, they get tagged and later in Mexico, villagers go out and find these monarchs who were tagged. Wednesday we were doing Dept. of Wildlife staff as part of their continuing education series and on Friday we had elem. students from nearby towns.

They learned about the life cycle... And the migration from leaving Mexico in the spring to as far as Canada in Summer and heading back to Mexico now (October). We had kids from Snyder and Grandfield.

One of the butterflies tagged was in a nearby roost in Hackberry that night. The staff also keeps a count nightly to see how many pass this way during the short migration and how many we tagged.

On Wednesday, Oct. 6, while Oklahoma biologists and game wardens were getting staff development (learning about Monarch butterfly migration and tagging, the TV crew from Out door Oklahoma was there filming bits and pieces. Here is the closing they shot showing the release of the butterflies while the host of the show wraps it up.
