Alabaster Bat Count 2019 (ABC19) - page 2

Sat. Jan. 26, 2019 - It is once again time for the annual Alabaster Bat Count. Time to count our hibernating friends in the cave. Last years count was down quite a bit (only 6,091) which we contribute to the movie crew that was in the cave for a few weeks disturbing the bats. This year we had another hitch in the plans... during Christmas break the cave had a side section & celiling collapse closing the trail from the beginning. Tours have to enter the exit, come to the big hall, then go back out. We went the whole way though. Here's our trip report.

I can see a new sign... DUCK! Rock ahead! <grin> The stuff is settled for now... but we didn't craw over the stuff either! (Cavers aren't that stupid!) The rock all the way down on the stairs. You have to go though that hole a bit smaller than a manhole.

Looking back down the 'trail' back to the lighted gypsum. Don't think even wild cave tours would like it here! Big brown on one of the new rockfall rocks. Maybe he did it!! Some of that old pipe they use for the handrails was pretty tough! It was holding up some big weight!

I tried to take a panoramic picture... not sure it does it justice. I'm sorry but the trail is closed now - Turn around!

Mike also noticed that the trail afterwards is cracking up. No foot traffic for almost a month now. He wanted pictures of the trail to have it documented.

Survey points - in the future they will be able to use lasers to see any movement in the cave. But back to what we came for... time to look (and count bats!) You'll see a lot of pictures of the same bat or bat mat in the following pictures.

That way scientists can look at the details and see the health of our bats in the cave. A Tri-colored bat. Seemed we had a lot of these this year! An 'official' stalactite in Alabaster Caverns! No, two of them... wait... is that a third? It's about 50 feet high and small so we used a camera to zoom in.

Common cave myotis (Myotis velifer) All our bats looked healthy... no visible signs of WNS on any that we could see. We did not swab this year. We'll probablly do it every two years or until the onset of WNS on our bats.
