Alabaster Bat Count 2013


                                                                                                                                     

Alabaster Caverns Bat Count or Alabaster Bat Count (ABC) is held annually to take the winter hibernation population count of the bats in the cave. Volunteers of the Selman Bat Watch, ODWC and park staff took part in the count this year.

Well... it's time for the annual Alabaster Caverns Bat Count 2013! (called ABC2013) This year the group that helps ODWC with the Selman Bat Watch gets to assist park personnel with the job. It's something we all look forward to... fun to do, fun to get caught up with events with friends....

Since we're aware White Nose Syndrome is one state away, we need to watch all of our bats for WNS. So since WNS is nearby, we'll be taking A LOT of pictures of our bats for experts to look at across Oklahoma... for any signs of WNS... but we're not expecting any at this time... conditions are just not right for it in Alabaster.

These are two Big Brown Bats that were pretty low... good photo opportunity... and they are hard to get a good picture of in the first place... We'll try to take all sides of a bat for the experts to look and see.
