Summer Excape 2014

First weeks after school - End of May 1st week of June 2014 - I got to work with the Dept. of Defence and LPS with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on a 3 week science camp. The first week was 1/2 days with classroom instruction on mostly outdoor science. The second week was field trips around SW Oklahoma to put the classroom lessons into real life. The third week was a trip to SE Oklahoma to Broken Bow and Beaver's Bend. Was a really fun time... but I also snuck in geocaching to them and got a handfull excited about it. That's what this page is really about.

So we're at TMS in Lawton and they have ancient GPS's to find 5 geocaches I have hidden on campus. One was a mini-nano stuck to this bench... having never seen one before, they had a dickens of a time finding it! But they got excited in class wanting another go at it!

Showing them the various kinds of caches and going over safety. The GPS's were 7 years old... not great but better than a compass! Field instructions....then they are let go!

Signing the log This one was a fake water sprinkler... this was very hard for most of them. they were in the right area, they even stepped on it, but only one group actually found it!

Back to the mini-nano with another group... they would get spot on with the coordinates then have to find it! Another group coming out to hunt... Out at Lake Altus and Quartz Mountain State Park... lots of mountains here (and real live caches!)

If they had SWAG, they could take stuff if they left stuff. This was a rough one... no trail and a cache on the top of the mountain....they took off like mountain goats and left the fat teacher huffing behind! They found it by the time I got up on the mountain!

And they were quite proud of it!! The next one was very weedy and snakey... only one made it to the end to find it! This one had not been found in 6 months (a magnetic nano the size of your little fingernail.) they found it in 3 minutes!
