Day 2 - Austin Caches

We got up wayyyy before sunrise and grabbed some easy P&G (Park and Grabs) from lamposts in the area before heading to the first of many caches today to meet Bob's challenges. It was a balmy and humid fog morning at 68 degrees when we started... by noon it was 50 with a 20 mph north wind and by end of day it was 38 with wind chills in the 20's... and we both had gotten wet during the day! <grin>

Our 2nd cache of the day was at a state park... we had to cross this waterfall... looks easy but wasn't... we were both quite worried on the slick rocks (it was also raining by then). But we finally got past the creek and found the trail. Later we found new bike tire tracks so we knew there was an easier way across the falls and we found it! (Whew!) The cache was in the woods but you went right by this old homestead built in the early days of Texas.

Leaving the park a bunch of deer had the right of way and took their sweet time crossing the road...

We did a challenge graveyard cache and saw an Earth Cache almost next door so went to look at it... Convict Hill The cache gave an explanation on the layering and asked questions that you had to be there to answer. Some of the layers were about 18" thick while others were 3 feet thick!

All together it was about 20 ft high with houses overhanging the cliff above! Then our fun hike... one that both of us were looking forward to.... Swept Away... an old car (Viritual Cache) you had to find on a river. We of course went on the wrong side to start but eventually got over and found it!!

Within 3 tenths of a mile from Swept Away was a GlenRose EarthCache. Lots of geological questions with this one... took forever to answer the questions. Some of these trees not only holding on for dearlife but withstanding floods too!

A good example of how nature can split even this hard limestone rock! D's Selfie at Glen Rose The traveltine buildup on the falls allows a little grotto underneath with it's own micro climate and ecosystem.
