One of our first stories we read in the year was the making of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. We then formed up our own bridgebuilding companies and with a $1,000 in startup cash (Mr. D bucks) had to develop a bridge that could do two things: allow a matchbook car pulled by string to go up, across, and down the bridge that was covering a 1 foot river (the size of a floor tile) and two: hold up at least 200 pounds of weight! The winners got a free pass on an assignment in the future. Sticks were for sale from the popicle dealer (Mr. D) at one dollar a stick. They were free to make up any design that they think would work. Then Mr. D pulled mean tricks like pulling the car over the edge of the bridge if they didn't have guard rails and such. Finally the weight test. Usually we get a few that actually pass the test and we had one this year that passed the ultimate test! Mr. D was able to drive his truck OVER the bridge and it survived! That was one sturdy bridge!!
